Why reinforcement matters here
Buggy traffic follows the same line every round, and that repetition is what kills turf. A confined, reinforced route spreads the load and keeps the root zone from compacting, so the path stays green and playable rather than becoming a worn brown scar between tee and fairway.

How it goes in
- Mark out the area and excavate to the depth of your sub-base plus the grid depth plus your infill blinding.
- Lay a woven geotextile across the formation, lapping joins by at least 300mm. This stops the sub-base and the subsoil mixing.
- Lay and compact the sub-base: 50-80mm MOT Type 1 under grass routes; 100mm where greenkeeping machinery runs. Compact in layers rather than all at once.
- Blind the sub-base with a thin layer of grit sand and screed it level. This is what gives you a flat finished surface.
- Push-fit the grids together across the area, working from one edge. Cut around obstacles with a jigsaw or fine-tooth saw.
- Fill the cells: Rootzone and grass on open routes, gravel at pinch points and gateways. Work the fill in with a stiff brush so no cell is left hollow.
- Check the finished level. Nothing should stand proud of the cell walls, and no cell should be left under-filled.
Most installations are straightforward groundwork. The grids themselves push-fit together and need no fixings, adhesive or specialist tools.
Which grid depth?
The 40mm general duty grid for grassed buggy routes, where the turf has to establish and stay playable. Switch to the 30mm heavy duty grid at gateways, bridge approaches and maintenance vehicle routes.
If you are between two options, take the heavier duty one. The cost difference across a typical project is small next to the cost of lifting and relaying a surface that was under-specified.
The mistake we see most often
Treating the whole route as one specification. The pinch points at bridges, gates and green surrounds take several times the traffic of the open stretches.
Common questions
Will it be visible from the fairway?
Not once established. Grass-filled routes blend into the surrounding turf far better than a hard path.
Can greenkeeping machinery use the same route?
Yes. Build the sub-base for the heaviest vehicle that will use it and it will take both.
What about wear at pinch points?
Gateways, bridge approaches and green surrounds take the most punishment. Many clubs use gravel infill there and grass elsewhere.
Is it playable if a ball lands on it?
A correctly filled and established surface plays as ordinary rough. Check your local rules if in doubt.
Will it affect play if a ball lands on the route?

Can we phase it hole by hole?
Yes, and most clubs do, working through the worst-wearing routes over a few closed seasons.
